The creator. Creatress?
This is a slight addendum to my last post about Mae West. (http://chatter4arts.blogspot.com/2014/12/we-still-dont-appreciate-mae-auteur.html) You see how she is called an auteur? This is a French word that has come to mean creator, one who is responsible for an artistic work -- and it's a masculine form; nearly all French nouns are either masculine or feminine. Now, nothing about Mae was masculine. So I thought it might be a good idea to see if there is now a feminine form of the term, which has been in use for at least fifty years now. Auteuse? Auteure?

Well, no, there isn't. It seems the Academie Francaise, which is the final authority on the French language, is still thinking it over. They'll let us know when they decide.

So I had to go with a term that I know is incorrect -- but there is no correct word. Yet.
